Appalachian Power is focusing on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Early Site Permitting Application process. We plan to collaborate with state, local and other federal agencies. This involves the analysis and evaluation of a potential site for SMR development in Virginia. The permitting process for an SMR site is extremely detailed, and the regulatory review, approval and construction can take a decade to complete.
The approach we are taking allows us to begin exploring potential sites and ensures that we are on track to meet the future energy needs of our Virginia customers. It also allows for meaningful public engagement throughout the process, including during public comment periods and hearings.
SMRs will play an important role in helping the commonwealth secure a reliable power supply and meet its clean energy goals. To balance renewable energy sources, SMRs can provide clean energy to Virginia residents 24/7, 365 days a year, rain or shine.
Generate between 50 and 500 megawatts (MW) of clean energy, enough to power as many as 500,000 homes annually
Have a smaller footprint than traditional nuclear or coal-fired plants
Utilize the latest advances in design to ensure safe and more efficient construction and operation
