Nuclear Power in Virginia

In 2022, traditional nuclear reactors provided 95% of Virginia's clean energy and 31% of Virginia's total electricity, according to the Virginia Department of Energy and 31% of Virginia's total electricity. Nuclear power is safe, reliable and vital to preserving Virginia's high quality of life.

The commonwealth is home to global leaders in nuclear energy and the world's largest naval base, where nuclear-powered carriers and submarines are stationed. About 100,000 Virginians work in the nuclear sector. Additionally, Virginia has been home to safe and reliable nuclear energy facilities since 1978, when Dominion Energy's North Anna Power Station began operating. Nuclear facilities power over 450,000 Virginia homes and generate more than $700 million in annual economic impact for the commonwealth.
